DIY Stained Wood Picture Frames

Holiday season is literally right around the corner, and we are getting excited about gift giving in my house. My girls love to give gifts to make our friends and family feel special and help them know how much we treasure them. Our very favorite kind of gifts are the homemade kind, like these DIY stained wood picture frames. It’s a great way to preserve a memory and create a one-of-a-kind present that will be cherished for years to come.

What you will need:

Unfinished wood picture frames (available at craft and hobby stores)

Wood stain

Washi tape

Baker’s twine

Step 1: Apply paint stain to your frame with a paintbrush.

Step 2: With a paper towel, gently wipe away excess stain to create a grained look for your frame.

Step 3: Allow the stain to dry, then get creative with washi tape decoration!

Step 4: Using baker’s twine and strips of washi tape, you can create a miniature pennant to decorate the top of your frame.

Step 5: Insert a favorite photograph and make someone’s holiday extra special with a handmade gift just for them!

  • My kids and I did this for a princess birthday party. We have 5 different tables and each table had a picture frame of a princess which told the girls where to sit. Very similar to a wedding but for little girls. We glued all sorts of things to them, jewels, stones, stars…you can individualize each one!!!

  • My son and I spend a lot of time restoring old wood furniture so this is a great project for him to work on while I do the bigger things! And, a great gift for Mom!!!!

  • I love the dark stain idea–it makes the craft-store frames look much higher-end.

  • Ah yes, the days of printed photos. This craft project is neat and seems easy to do. I’d certainly love to receive this from someone and then I would proudly display it with my other framed photos. Very unique!

  • That flag is awesome. I want to make those flags and put them on other things too like mini lamp shades. Great activity for kids.

  • Gifting people with photos is the best. It’s cost effective, easy to do, and the perfect personal gift — better than a generic gift card that’s for sure.

  • Truly an incredible gift idea! I love giving close family and friends pictures for the holidays, especially since people don’t typically print photos these days. Their eyes light up when they receive a framed beautiful photo for their home and these homemade frames make it that much better.
