Dear Joanne, Thank you for your very good work with this horrible disease, I applaud you. I understand what you mean by dying WITH Alzheimer's, but I fear that some people who do not realize what Alzheimer's is, or that it can strike younger people as well, may misunderstand your comment. Alzheimer’s IS fatal. If you do not have a co-morbidity that is what you will die from. The signals from your brain stop directing your organs and they fail...
Thank you for your point about treating PWD's (persons with dementia) with respect. This is one of the biggest challenges I think folks in the early stage have. When the speech and cognitive difficulties start to be noticeable to “outsiders”, they can be rude or shy away. It is going to take a lot of voices to teach the world how to be friends with and talk to someone with Alzheimer’s. It is different. But it’s possible, look what we have done for people with Down Syndrome. They have come such a long way in the last 20 years. My wish for Alzheimer’s is pretty much the same. We can do it, let’s all work together.

I am a Personal Support Worker here in Canada. I got into the business because I wanted to work with Palitive persons. Well I found out I am great with Alzheimer's and Dementia persons. And in a way they too are palitive. One thing people need to remember is that you do not die FROM Alzheimer's you die WITH it. I have a client that I have been with for a year now and he has finally begun to recognize me and remember my name. I find it very fulfilling and rewarding to be there helping and learning from these people. PLEASE remember do not treat them as invalids!!! RESPECT THEM treat them as they have ALWAYS been treated. DIGNITY is a must!!! They may not remember you, but they still have feelings too!!!!! That is just my 2 cents worth. Soleil keep up the great work!!!! You are doing a fantastic job. I dont know if you read these or not but well I am putting it out there anyway!!!! Thank you
